We have seen what the histogram of the processed image looks like. Now
lets have a look at the cleaned image itself:
The background is now white, and the contrast good enougn, the noise has
gone and overall it looks different, isnt it?
So lets summarize the steps needed to make the basic cleaning of the
scan of a pencil sketch:
- Call up the Levels window (Ctrl-L or Image|Adjust|Levels)
- Under visual control, drag the black point to cut off the rightmost
part of the histogram where there are no pixels, or by 3-5 levels
otherwise
- Similarly, drag the white point to cut off the leftmost (background
color) peak where it touches the top of the window, leaving its left slope only
- Drag the midpoint till you are satisfied with the brightness.
Its that simple, and takes but a few seconds. Displaying your images
with all the garbage, black-on-gray, and such, serves you
a bad service. Develop a good habit of doing this to all the scans you make.
But, although the scan is now clean and looks much better, there is
more that can be done to make it more presentable. We should adjust the
composition and maybe do something to liven up the dull gray color.
